location SALTWORKS CASTLE
The first stage of research on wall polychromes conducted by the Laboratory for Analysis and Non-Destructive Testing of Historical Objects has been completed at the Saltworks Castle.
The research will help identify the history, technique and technology of these valuable paintings. The researchers took photographs under analytical lights and took samples to identify pigments, binder and cross-section of the layers. The samples have gone to the laboratory and are being analyzed.

The castle's polychromes were discovered during the castle's renovation in 2022. The impressive paintings had been hidden for hundreds of years under layers of plaster. The oldest decorations are tentatively dated to the 17th century.

The artistically outstanding works underscore the unique significance of the Castle as the center of administration of the royal salt enterprise, which was the longest-operating, most profitable and most important enterprise in the history of Poland.

The research is carried out by specialists from LANBOZ, i.e. the Laboratory for Analysis and Non-Destructive Testing of Historical Objects, as part of the National Heritage Research Center project. The laboratory is a very modern research unit, conducting analysis and technological research of works of art of world renown. It was established in 2004 at the National Museum in Krakow.

Collection of research material at the Castle, on the part of the Museum, was handled by Pamela Grajny-Brzezinska, art conservator, and on the part of LANBOZ by chemists Dr. Anna Klisinska-Kopacz, Dr. Tomasz Wilkosz and Michal Obarzanowski, art conservator.
