During this year's Salt Festival, we hosted a delegation from Spain, from the town of Cardona in Catalonia, which, like Wieliczka, was founded in the Middle Ages and developed over the centuries thanks to salt mining, and which houses the tourist mine "Salt Mountain" and the mighty magnate castle of the Counts of Cardona. Our museum was honored by the presence of Ferran Estruch Torrents - mayor of the city of Cardona, Francesc Ponsa Herrera - director of the Cardona Historical Foundation, and the heads of the education and tourism departments.
A delegation from a city located about 120 km north of Barcelona came to Wieliczka specifically to see the Salt Festival and learn about our mining heritage - the salt mine, the Saltworks Castle, the graduation tower, as well as to learn about the rich traditions associated with salt mining. The Spanish guests were very impressed with our event and have already announced their participation with their attractions in next year's edition. This proves that the Salt Festival has a wide reach and a unique character.

Earlier - on June 1-2, 2024, our Museum was a "special guest" at the "Festa de la Sal" event just in Cardona, a historic town in the foothills of the Pyrenees. During the festa, museum workers, dressed in period costumes, presented historical demonstrations of salt brewing in a pan, rope twisting in a ropemaker's workshop and salt crushing in a salt shed. They also invited Spanish spectators to participate in a number of educational games starring salt. A special scientific session on geology, archaeology, mining technology, history and international projects of the Saltworks Museum was held in the City Hall with a full audience. The participation of the Museum's 28-member representation and the prepared attractions resonated with the Catalan media, and the delegation from Wieliczka was received very warmly by both the city's authorities and residents.

The Wieliczka salt deposit, the Wieliczka Museum, the mine, the spa and the city itself are now also presented in Cardona in an open-air board exhibition which opened right next to the Salt Mountain mine. The exhibition in Spanish and English was prepared by the Cracow Saltworks Museum and will promote Wieliczka until the end of October 2024, after which a second exhibition prepared by the Saltworks Museum will be presented there:"Historical Salt Production Centers in Europe."

The Museum's participation in the event "Medieval Fair.Festival of Salt" in Cardona, the exhibition in Spain and the arrival of the Catalans were financially supported by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage as part of the "Inspiring Culture 2024-2025" program.
