location SALTWORKS CASTLE
DATE 1 - 30 November 2022
We invite you to visit the Saltworks Castle as part of the "Free November at the Royal Residences" campaign.
The Saltworks Castle in Wieliczka was the headquarters of the salt company, the Cracow Saltworks, for 700 years. In the past it was a royal property, and today it is the site of permanent and temporary exhibitions.

Especially noteworthy is the permanent exhibition "Salt shakers - small masterpieces of art" with world-class objects. Wieliczka's collection of salt vessels is counted among the most valuable in the world. They come from almost all continents and were made in famous goldsmith workshops and porcelain factories. In the past they testified to the status and wealth of the owner. On the table they stood in front of the most important person designating a place for him.

The archeological exhibition "Prehistory of Wieliczka and the Surrounding Area" takes you on a journey into the distant past of the city. It presents the oldest salt-making vessels from 6,000 years ago and the only fully reconstructed brewing cup from the Lusatian culture of the Bronze Age in Poland. Before the advent of money, salt was a wage, or object money. Its value was based on the usefulness of the salt.

The Gothic Hall presents portraits of the mine's administrators, including the distinguished mine reformer Jan Gotfryd Borlach and the controversial miner, mine manager Sebastian Lubomirski. In the Castle you can also see the museum's latest acquisitions and among them are valuable salt cellars from Limoges, France, made using the painting enamel technique, and a plan of the town of Wieliczka from 1717 made by royal geometer Krzysztof Juliusz Herttwig.

The castle also allows visitors to encounter contemporary art by artists from the Polart group; the exhibition is on view until November 13.

Noteworthy is the documentary film "Passion from the Depths of the Earth. Alphonse Dlugosz and his life's work," which was made on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of the birth of the exceptional man and creator of the Wieliczka Cracow Saltworks Museum. The film is a record of memories of former Museum employees. Dlugosz himself was one of the people who cared about the restoration of the Saltworks Castle.

In a situation with a large number of visitors, you may have to wait to enter. This will allow you to maintain the comfort of visiting the Castle's exhibitions.
