Royal Castle in Sandomierz
DATE
26 January 2026 - 31 January 2027
The exhibition reveals how important salt was throughout the centuries and what role vessels used for its storage played — often functioning as small works of art. On display are salt cellars and other spice containers made of silver, originating from various workshops in Poland and abroad, dating from the late 15th to the early 20th century. This rich collection allows visitors to trace changes in form and decoration, largely influenced by prevailing fashions, the tastes of buyers, and dining customs.
The exhibition also features rare and unique collector’s items. The salt cellars will be presented alongside other elements of an expensive silver tableware set (from the collection of the Sandomierz Castle Museum), offering insight into table culture and dining customs in early modern Europe. The display is complemented by examples of iconography and magnificent salt crystals referencing the Wieliczka Salt Mine—the place from which salt has for centuries been delivered to the most distinguished tables.
The salt cellar collection of the Cracow Saltworks Museum is among the most valuable in the world. The presented objects come from European workshops and showcase styles ranging from Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque to Classicism, Historicism, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco.
The exhibition is curated by Klementyna Ochniak-Dudek — curator and head of the Department of Art and Ethnography at the Cracow Saltworks Museum in Wieliczka — and Renata Grzebuła, assistant curator in the Department of Art at the Sandomierz Castle Museum.
The exhibition will be open to visitors until 31 January 2027 at the Castle Museum in Sandomierz.
