Feast of Salt 2017

The Feast of Salt will be held on 11 June 2017 in the Saltworks Castle in Wieliczka. The motto of this year’s event is “Salt for Culture: From the Sea to the Mountains.” The two ends of our country are connected by the Vistula River, which will also become an important element of our games. It is worth reminding that in the past, the queen of Polish rivers was the major trade route for salt.

Święto Soli, fot. P. Chwalba The event, organised by the Cracow Saltworks Museum Wieliczka, will transform the Saltworks Castle into a venue where the past meets with the present. The history of the saltworks enterprise will be revealed in handicraft workshops offering an insight into old professions and showing the arcana of salt brewing, blacksmithing, barrel making, rope making and wickerwork. The participants will have the option of creating their own seal, learning calligraphy, making a rope and forming a pot, as well as trying their hand as a blacksmith. The archaeological stand will show that the beginnings of salt making in Wieliczka date back 5,500 years. The stands of Polish salt mines from Wieliczka, Bochnia and Kłodawa offering salt products will testify to the connection between the past and the present times.

Święto Soli, Muzeum Żup Krakowskich WieliczkaThe Feast of Salt will also be filled with games inspired by salt and miners’ work: rope slides, climbing walls, “Salt Travels” quest and fine art classes with salt dough and salt-cellar painting.

The artistic setting of the event will be kept in mountainous and sea-related rhythms. “Góralska Hora” band will play on stage and the final concert will be performed by “Sąsiedzi, Folk & Szanty” band. It is also worth visiting the temporary exhibition entitled “The Forgotten Collection of The Niedzielski Family” with a tour guide, as well as the Saltworks Castle – the historical seat of the salt mine, the largest “corporation” that has operated in the history of Poland.
And the saltworks kitchen will prepare special delicatessen…
