Maria Teresa IV chamber

A cross-shaped horse winch displayed in this chamber is the prototype of more advanced hauling mechanisms. Of similar construction were cross-shaped hand-operated winches used as early as the Middle Ages. The first cross-shaped horse winches were introduced in the Wieliczka mine at the beginning of the 17th century. The mechanism displayed here consists of a vertical axle with a rope drum, four arms with attachments for horses and a brake.
Construction details and operating principles of the mechanism present technical drawings from the 19th century and a painting by A. Długosz.
